New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Hawaii

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to nearly 2,000 tech businesses and 15,000-plus tech professionals

Honolulu, Hawaii – Technology industry employment in Hawaii recorded a modest decline in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 47 jobs, a drop of less than 1 percent. Hawaii is home to an estimated 15,380 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Hawaii – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 19,400 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 3.3 percent ($2.6 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Hawaii was an estimated $81,600 in 2016, 72 percent higher than the average state wage ($47,500).

Other Key Findings

  • Hawaii ranks 30th among all states in the Cyberstates 2017 Innovation Score, which is based on an analysis of new tech patents, tech startups and new tech business establishments on a per capita basis.
  • An estimated 2,072 tech business establishments are located in Hawaii.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (1,450) and network and computer systems administrators (1,340).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the category of telecommunications services (+ 2.7 percent).
  • Employers across the state posted an estimated 1,375 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
