State’s tech workforce growth projection of 2.7% and nearly 42,000 new positions this year

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California technology employment gains may see a brighter outlook in returning to growth in this year, according to CompTIA reporting, the nonprofit association for the information technology (IT) industry and workforce.

CompTIA’s “State of the Tech Workforce 2024” reports net tech employment[1] spanning the aggregate tech sector and tech occupation workforces reaching nearly 1.6 million workers in the year ahead, an increase of more than 41,000 net new workers. This represents a projected year-over-year gain of 2.7%, following a year that was flat for tech employment.

“After periods of overperformance and underperformance, the overarching tech story remains positive,” said Tim Herbert, chief research officer at CompTIA. “Something, something…

The San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles and San Diego metropolitan areas are all in the top 25 markets for anticipated new tech hiring this year. Employer demand is expected to be particularly strong for positions in data, software and cybersecurity.

The economic impact of tech will also continue to expand, building on a base of an estimated $542.5 billion in annual direct economic impact and more than 57,000 technology companies contributing to the state’s economy. About 1,200 new tech companies opened for business in 2023.
