New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in District of Columbia

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds district is home to 3,500 tech businesses and 38,500 tech professionals

Washington, D.C. – Technology industry employment in the District of Columbia grew by an estimated 2.3 percent in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce grew by an estimated 854 jobs. The district is home to an estimated 38,500 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 55,900 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 5.1 percent ($6.2 billion) of the overall economy in the District of Columbia.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker was an estimated $113,600 in 2016, 29 percent higher than the average D.C. wage ($88,400).

Other Key Findings

  • The District of Columbia ranks ninth in the Cyberstates 2017 Innovation Score, which is based on an analysis of new tech patents, tech startups and new tech business establishments on a per capita basis.
  • An estimated 3,502 tech business establishments are located in D.C.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (4,750) and computer systems analysts (4,530).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the category of Internet services (+ 16.5 percent) and computer systems designs and IT services (+ 5 percent).
  • D.C. employers posted an estimated 9,154 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
