When you’re responsible for not only understanding the problems that plague small businesses but also identifying solutions, where can you turn to for dependable data? Cindy Phillips, director of product management for CMIT Solutions, turns to CompTIA research.

CMIT Solutions – a CompTIA member since 2010 – protects small businesses by proactively managing what matters most; the technical infrastructure that keeps business running. “Ask any small business owner what happens if we disconnect your computer network,” Phillips said. “They’ll likely tell you that their business grinds to a halt. Revenue stops. They can’t process orders. They cannot do what they do best.”

With her company offering services such as remote backup and disaster recovery, cloud computing, anti-spam software, hardware purchasing, help-desk software, outsourced IT support and visual collaboration, Phillips’ job requires her to define market problems across the board.

As a CompTIA member, CMIT Solutions has access to CompTIA’s research and market intelligence in the form of over 100 reports, whitepapers, videos and webinars. Using rigorous research techniques, CompTIA collects data from tens of thousands of end-users and IT companies on a wide range of issues covering tech trends, channel dynamics and the IT workforce.

Phillips uses raw data from CompTIA’s research reports as an external secondary source and confirmation source against the primary research data she collects when collaborating on a new product.

“I use CompTIA research to gather trends in our market segment,” she said. “Then I look at the market call reports that I generate and try to determine whether there are any confirming data points to support the existence of the trend in our market segment.

“I also use the data to try to distill or confirm any problem statements that I’ve collected,” Phillips said. “In short, CompTIA research is very useful to me.”
