August Congressional Recess a Great Time to Talk Immigration Reform

All is quiet here in D.C., with Congress home for its annual summer recess. While members of Congress are back in their districts, they are continuing to hear and talk to their electorates. As in years past, the August recess is a great time for constituents to bend their representatives’ ears on key issues. This year it is immigration reform.

TechVoice members and TECNA alliance partners have been playing an enormous role in this process by pounding the pavement and meeting with their local representatives to voice their support for immigration reform. This is critical, as our field contacts tell us that momentum is in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. This positive momentum in support of reform is necessary if there is any chance for Congress to take action when it returns to D.C. in September. A huge thank you to all those who have taken the time to meet with their representatives to keep the drum beat going strong.

When Congress returns, the ball is completely in the House’s court, as the Senate passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill in June. We expect the House to continue its work on immigration reform by advancing a series of bills that address specific issues through the committees of jurisdiction. At this time, we do not have any indication when these bills will be brought to the floor for a full vote, if at all. Time is not on our side as there are only nine legislative working days in September.

For the rest of August and as we move into the fall, we will continue to advocate for immigration reform while working with our local and federal partners on this important issue.
