CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to nearly 2,500 tech businesses and 20,000-plus tech professionals
Providence, R.I. – Technology industry employment in Rhode Island was essentially flat in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.
The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 119 jobs, a drop of less than 1 percent. Rhode Island is still home to an estimated 20,189 tech industry workers.
Technology occupations across all other industries in Rhode Island – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 23,500 in 2016.
The tech sector accounts for an estimated 5.4 percent ($3 billion) of the overall state economy.
The annualized average wage for a Rhode Island tech industry worker was an estimated $82,700 in 2016, 63 percent higher than the average state wage ($50,700).
Other Key Findings
- Rhode Island ranks 29th among all states in the Cyberstates 2017 Innovation Score, which is based on an analysis of new tech patents, tech startups and new tech business establishments on a per capita basis.
- The state is home to an estimated 2,496 tech business establishments.
- Leading tech occupations in the state include network and computer systems administrators (1,890), application software developers (1,870) and computer systems analysts (1,650).
- The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of computer systems design and IT services (+ 4.9 percent) and engineering services (+ 2.5 percent).
