CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to 3,000 tech businesses and 22,000-plus tech professionals

Jackson, Miss. – Technology industry employment in Mississippi recorded a modest decline in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 438 jobs, a drop of 1.9 percent. Mississippi is home to an estimated 22,261 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Mississippi – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 31,500 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 2.8 percent ($3 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Mississippi was an estimated $63,200 in 2016, 67 percent higher than the average state wage ($37,900).

Other Key Findings

• Mississippi is home to an estimated 3,042 tech business establishments.
• Among the leading tech occupations in the state are computer user support specialists (2,310), telecommunications equipment installers and repairers (2,060) and electrical and electronic equipment assemblers (1,870).
• The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the category of computer systems design and IT services (+ 7.7 percent).
