CompTIA Issues Statement on Signing of US-Japan Trade Agreement

Sep 25, 2019

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) issued the following statement from Cinnamon Rogers, Executive Vice President of Advocacy, regarding the signing of a United States-Japan Trade Agreement (USJTA) that includes high-standard digital trade provisions.

“CompTIA applauds the work of the Administration to reach an agreement with Japan on digital trade in the first phase of negotiations. The United States-Japan Trade Agreement (USJTA) establishes new rules to promote the flow of cross-border data and prevent data localization measures which are top priorities for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry. The agreement also includes rules to strengthen cybersecurity and ban customs duties, as well as protections for consumers, personal information, and source code and encrypted key transfers.

"Japan is a critical market for the technology sector as the fourth leading market for U.S. tech service exports and the sixth leading export market of tech products. We applaud the Administration’s efforts to support the growth of the technology industry in the first tranche of negotiations, especially with an important and strategic trading partner that also values high-standard digital rules."
