As artificial intelligence becomes a permanent fixture in the workplace, the conversation is shifting to whether workers have the skills needed to translate AI experimentation into business value. CompTIA’s inaugural AI Skills Tracker, which surveyed more than 1,000 business and technology professionals, offers a benchmark for understanding how business and technology professionals are learning, using, and benefiting from AI. The findings reveal a workforce that is embracing AI, but one that still needs clearer pathways for training, application, and career development.
The report’s findings align with broader workforce trends. Microsoft’s 2025 Work Trend Index found that 81% of business leaders expect AI agents to be integrated into their AI strategies within the next 12–18 months. With AI agents themselves being a recent evolution of generative chat-based interfaces, the pressure to build AI-ready workforces is accelerating at the same pace as the technology itself.
1. AI usage is mainstream, but business integration remains uneven
AI has already become part of the daily routine for many individuals. CompTIA found that 80% of respondents use AI multiple times per month or more, while 42% use AI on a daily basis. Yet much of that usage remains personal rather than business-focused. More than half of respondents estimate that business use accounts for 20% or less of their overall AI activity, and 61% rely exclusively on free AI accounts. Employees are experimenting with AI, but many organizations have not yet fully connected AI tools to business processes, data systems, and governance frameworks.
The challenge ahead is no longer encouraging employees to try AI. It is helping organizations integrate AI into secure, repeatable workflows that generate measurable value. The real enterprise value comes from integration, even though so much of the focus to date has been on workforce literacy. Integration will define the specific skills that are needed.
2. Curiosity is driving understanding of AI fluency
CompTIA’s data shows a clear connection between skill-building and AI familiarity. Overall, 29% of respondents say they are very familiar with AI, but that figure jumps to 47% among people actively building new career skills. Individuals who invest time in learning are significantly more likely to understand AI’s capabilities and limitations. The broader labor market is moving in the same direction. According to the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, employers expect 39% of workers’ core skills to be transformed or become outdated by 2030, reflecting the growing importance of continuous upskilling. The WEF report also identifies AI and big data, cybersecurity, and technological literacy among the fastest-growing skill areas globally.
LinkedIn Learning’s 2025 Workplace Learning Report and CompTIA’s work on Workforce and Learning Trends both find that continuous learning is important for career success. Organizations with mature career development programs are better positioned to adapt to emerging technologies – LinkedIn’s study found that 51% of “career development champions” described their organizations as front runners in generative AI adoption, compared to 36% of those with weaker career development programs.
3. AI is delivering benefits, but better use cases are needed
CompTIA’s findings show that AI is producing positive outcomes in the workplace. Overall, 71% of respondents report a positive impact from AI, with the most frequently cited benefit being faster task completion. More than half of those experiencing positive outcomes say AI helps them complete work more quickly. The data also cautions that without proper validation and quality controls, faster work may not always translate into better outcomes. The next phase of AI maturity will require organizations to pair automation with governance and human oversight.
Looking forward, the report reveals that estimated positive impact in the future is estimated at 77%. Given this is not much higher than the current number, there is a pressing need for clearer use cases. Employees have found ways to leverage AI successfully on an individual basis, but to move forward they will need stronger organizational guidance around fully integrating AI into their workflow.
4. The future of AI training is practical, role-based, and centered around security and data
Perhaps the most important finding from the AI Skills Tracker is that workers want more practical guidance on how AI applies to their jobs. Current learning efforts are largely focused on general AI concepts, safe and secure usage, and basic interactions with AI tools. Looking ahead, respondents expressed the greatest interest in learning about best practices in secure usage, doing data analysis, understanding general AI concepts, and using AI to extend core skills of their current or future job roles. Respondents seek training that will help them apply AI in real-world situations. In terms of desired training improvements, respondents would like to see more information on security risks, help with identifying use cases for AI, more hands-on exercises/labs, and help with validating AI output.
The connection to job relevance is worth noting. The data finds that 52% of respondents would be more likely to pursue AI training if they could clearly see a connection to their role. Successful AI training programs will move beyond general awareness and focus on practical skills that help employees solve real business problems. The data indicates that the organizations that invest in AI skills today will be best positioned to capture AI’s long-term value tomorrow.
