Shikirra’s career journey is nothing short of inspiring. Originally aspiring to work in medicine, she faced challenges that led her to reevaluate her passions. “I bombed chemistry twice, and it just didn’t pan out well,” she candidly shared. But instead of giving up, Shikirra rediscovered her interests and found her true calling in technology.
With a renewed focus, Shikirra dove into the world of IT, earning multiple CompTIA certifications, including Project+, A+, Network+, Security+, and CySA+. These certifications not only reignited her passion for cybersecurity but also opened doors to a variety of career paths. “What renewed my interest in cybersecurity was just learning that there are so many career paths you can go into—GRC, which is more about compliance, being an analyst, or even red teaming, where you’re pretending to be a cybercriminal and breaking into systems,” she explained.
Shikirra’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Balancing work, motherhood, and being a student required determination and resilience. However, her enrollment at Western Governors University (WGU) provided the flexibility she needed. “Being a student at WGU allows you to take your certifications simultaneously while getting your bachelor’s degree. Taking classes remotely gave me the flexibility to still be there as a mother to my child,” she said. The support from instructors and mentors at WGU was instrumental in her success, helping her stay on track and achieve her goals.
The value of CompTIA certifications
Shikirra credits her CompTIA certifications for giving her a competitive edge in the tech industry. “CompTIA certifications are valuable because they provide foundational knowledge. For example, A+ covers everything you need to know for a help desk position,” she shared. These certifications not only prepared her for the workforce but also counted as college credits, making her educational journey even more rewarding. “It was a two-for-one deal. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
A quick path to success
After completing her Security+ certification at WGU, Shikirra wasted no time applying for jobs. Within just two months, she landed a role as a cybersecurity analyst—a position she’s held for over a year now. “The process was pretty quick. I knew I was prepared because I was getting the knowledge I needed and doing the work,” she said. Her role allows her to make a tangible impact every day, ensuring her company remains safe from cyber threats.
“I love that I get to see how I can make sure this company remains safe. People don’t realize how even small businesses in your community are part of the bigger picture. I’m proud to do my part in protecting those things,” Shikirra reflected.
