What Is on the CompTIA Network+ Exam?

January 3, 2025

CompTIA Network+ helps develop a career in IT infrastructure, covering troubleshooting, configuring, and managing networks. Successful candidates will have the following skills:

  • Establish network connectivity by deploying wired and wireless devices.
  • Explain the purpose of documentation and maintain network documentation.
  • Configure common network services.
  • Explain basic data-center, cloud, and virtual-networking concepts.
  • Monitor network activity and troubleshoot performance and availability issues.
  • Implement network security hardening techniques.
  • Manage, configure, and troubleshoot network infrastructure.

CompTIA Network+ (N10-009) has been updated and reorganized to address the current networking technologies. The current version has expanded coverage of several domains by adding the following:

  • Foundational Focus: CompTIA Network+ continues to emphasize foundational networking tools and technologies to create secure networks and ensure the availability of critical business information.
  • Modern Network Environments: The N10-009 exam includes expanded coverage of modern network environments and an extended discussion on factors related to physical installations, which were not present in N10-008.
  • Software Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN): With organizations increasingly relying on geographically distributed locations, Network+ now covers SD-WAN in addition to Software Defined Networking (SDN).
  • Scalability with VxLAN: To address scalability issues in large-scale network deployments, the exam now includes VxLAN (Virtual extensible Local Area Network).
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Network+ introduces IaC, a transformative approach to automate and streamline infrastructure management, reducing errors and improving efficiency.
  • Intermediate and Main Distribution Frames: The exam now delves into the critical roles of Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) and Main Distribution Frame (MDF) in networking.
  • Zero-Trust Architecture: Security remains a top priority, with Network+ integrating zero-trust architecture to eliminate assumed trust and ensure persistent authentication of digital interactions.
  • SASE/SSE for Network Security: The exam incorporates Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Security Service Edge (SSE) to enhance network fortification.

How many questions are on the CompTIA Network+ exam?

The CompTIA Network+ exam has no more than 90 questions.

After completing the exam, you will be asked to fill out some optional exit survey information about your study practices and why you decided to get certified. This will consist of about 12 multiple-choice questions.

What types of questions are on the CompTIA Network+ exam?

The CompTIA Network+ exam includes a combination of multiple-choice questions, drag-and-drop activities, and performance-based items. The multiple-choice questions are single- and multiple-response. The performance-based items test your ability to solve problems in a simulated environment.

Remember to manage your time wisely when solving these problems on your exam. Most of them will appear at the beginning of the exam and you won’t be able to see a clock when working on the items.

What are the CompTIA Network+ exam domains, and what do they cover?

The CompTIA Network+ exam includes the following domains and topics:

  • Networking Concepts: Explain the purpose of a variety of networking concepts and implement them appropriately
  • Network Implementations: Understand routing technologies and important factors of physical installations; configure switching technologies and wireless devices.
  • Network Operations: Use best practices to manage the network, determine policies, and ensure business continuity
  • Network Security: Summarize physical security and common attacks while securing the wired and wireless network
  • Network Troubleshooting and Tools: Explain the network troubleshooting methodology and appropriate tools to support connectivity and performance
