What is AI Fundamentals? 

AI Fundamentals is a vendor-neutral course that builds the practical AI literacy employers expect across all majors and career paths. Students learn how modern AI works, how to use AI tools effectively and responsibly, and how to evaluate AI-generated content in academic and workplace settings.

Offered as a 3-credit course, AI Fundamentals gives institutions a turnkey, workforce-aligned AI curriculum without requiring faculty to build it from scratch.

The course is designed for all students, regardless of their area of focus, and requires no prior AI or programming experience.

What students learn

Students develop foundational AI literacy through a combination of conceptual understanding, hands-on practice, and critical evaluation. By the end of the course, students will be able to: 

  • Explain core AI and generative AI concepts: Understand what modern AI is, how tools like chatbots work at a conceptual level, and where AI is used in academic and workplace contexts.

  • Determine when and how to use AI effectively: Identify appropriate and inappropriate AI use cases and understand how AI is reshaping work, learning, and decision-making across disciplines.

  • Apply responsible, ethical, and secure AI practices: Recognize risks such as bias, hallucinations, privacy concerns, and misuse, and apply principles for ethical and transparent AI use.

  • Write effective prompts and guide AI interactions: Create clear prompts, refine outputs through follow-up questions, and manage multi-turn AI interactions to improve quality and relevance.

  • Evaluate and verify AI-generated outputs: Detect errors and bias, assess output quality, and apply basic verification techniques and workflows.

  • Use AI to support communication, learning, and analysis: Apply AI to writing, revision, study support, content creation, and simple analytical or decision-making tasks while maintaining academic integrity.

  • Understand introductory AI automation and workflows: Identify tasks suitable for basic AI-assisted automation and recognize the role of agentic and human-in-the-loop workflows.

  • Prepare for AI-enabled careers and collaboration: Communicate about AI use clearly, recognize AI-related skills in job postings, and plan next steps for continued AI skill development.
