Canada’s tech workforce surpasses 1.5 million workers, highlighting demand for skilled talent, new CompTIA report reveals

Tech-related jobs forecast to grow nearly 2% this year

OTTAWA, Ontario – Canada’s technology workforce is set to expand again in 2026, continuing a multi-year growth trend that underscores the sector’s increasing role in the national economy, new research published by CompTIA, the leading global provider of vendor-neutral IT training and certifications, finds.

Net tech employment[1] is projected to rise 1.8% in 2026, creating about 28,000 additional jobs and increasing the tech workforce to roughly 1.54 million workers, CompTIA’s “State of the Tech Workforce Canada 2026” reveals. That forecast aligns with 2025 results when net tech employment grew by 1.9% – more than 28,000 jobs.

“Technology has become central to how every industry grows and innovates,” said Seth Robinson, vice president, industry research, CompTIA. “The pace of tech hiring in Canada makes one thing clear—workers who invest in in-demand digital skills will be best positioned to compete, while employers that don’t build those capabilities risk slowing their growth.”

Canada’s tech workforce has added more than 300,000 jobs since 2020, making it one of the country’s fastest-growing sources of post-pandemic employment. Tech roles now represent 7.1% of the national workforce, highlighting the sector’s expanding footprint across industries.

This momentum is expected to accelerate. Tech employment is projected to grow at more than twice the pace of overall job growth over the next five years, intensifying demand for digital skills and increasing pressure on employers to find and develop qualified talent.

“Technology is fueling economic growth, but Canada’s talent pipeline isn’t keeping pace. If we don’t accelerate workforce training, we risk slowing innovation and weakening our competitiveness,” said Gary Mofford, Canada account director for CompTIA. “Sustaining this momentum depends on how quickly we equip workers with the digital skills employers need.”

Tech job growth in Canada is concentrated in a small number of provinces and major urban centers, intensifying competition for skilled talent. Ontario alone accounts for nearly half (48.8%) of projected net tech employment nationwide. In 2025, the province added an estimated 21,595 tech workers—more than all other provinces combined—highlighting both its dominance and the growing pressure on talent pipelines.

Toronto leads Canada’s tech sector, with the largest workforce (440,551) and the highest talent concentration (11% of total employment). But Canada’s strength extends well beyond a single hub: Vancouver (9%), Montreal (8.6%), and Calgary (8.5%) also outperform the national average, signaling a broad, competitive talent base across multiple cities.

Technology jobs are a key engine of wage growth in Canada’s economy. The median annual wage for tech occupations is $103,104 (CAD), about 49% higher than the national median across all jobs. At the same time, the sector continues to expand. Canada added roughly 3,600 tech businesses in 2025, bringing the total close to 87,000 and reinforcing the strong demand for tech talent.
