CompTIA asserts that the immigrant contribution to the US is undeniable, and high-skilled foreign immigrants continue to drive substantial economic growth. More than 40 percent of Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. were founded by immigrants or their children, and these firms employ more than 10 million people worldwide.

The US must reform immigration policies so that talent from around the world who come to the US for education and opportunity are able to put down roots, to create jobs and to educate the next generation of talent. We believe that if we do not welcome talent here, it will go elsewhere and the U.S. will fall farther behind.

CompTIA Releases Immigration Policy White Paper

WASHINGTON – CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association, released the first white paper in a three-part series on the future of the 21st Century Workforce. This first paper focuses on immigration policy and why the immediate need for access to the global talent pool is vital to achieve a robust technology workforce. Future papers will cover the need for policies to improve STEM education initiatives and greater investment in job training programs.

According to the white paper, the U.S. technology industry and its workforce are strong, but to remain competitive globally government and industry must address a talent pipeline that is increasingly falling short of the needs for technology workers across all sectors. As competition from overseas mounts, recruiting top talent is only becoming more important.  Foreign competitors are recruiting globally and doing so aggressively; the United States must adapt its immigration laws to remain competitive in this space. The white paper concludes with recommendations that U.S. policymakers take the following steps to address the need for continued access to the global talent pool: increase Green Cards for high-skilled STEM graduates; create new visas for entrepreneurs; and adopt market-based visa caps.

  • Bipartisan Apprenticeship Bill to Shrink Skills Gap, Grow Economy Introduced in Congress

    Earlier this year, CompTIA published an eye-opening report on the skills gap. Titled “Assessing the IT Skills Gap,” CompTIA’s stellar research team surveyed 600 professionals to better understand the gap and its effects on the IT industry and the U.S. economy. Among the findings, CompTIA found that there is a widespread belief that the skills gap is growing, and that between now and 2024, approximately 800,000 IT workers will retire. Couple this with the more than 600,000 IT jobs that went unfilled in Q4 2016, and you see the problem – absent a big change, our economy might not have the human capital it needs to grow.
