CompTIA Cyberstates™ 2018 report shows tech sector contributes $6.8 billion to economy
Washington, D.C. – Technology-related employment in the District of Columbia grew modestly in 2017, adding just over 1,000 new jobs, according to Cyberstates™ 2018, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry published today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology industry association.
With an estimated 78,500 tech workers, the District ranks 33rd in net tech employment.[1] Tech workers make up 9.7 percent of the District’s total workforce. The average tech industry wage in D.C. increased 4.3 percent in 2017, to $120,443. That’s 32 percent higher than the district’s average annual private sector wage of $91,100.
The tech sector is responsible for an estimated 5.5 percent ($6.8 billion) of the overall economy in the District of Columbia, which is home to more than 3,600 tech business establishments.
The District saw a 24.5 percent increase from 2016 to 2017 in the number of job postings related to emerging technologies – such as the Internet of Things, smart cities, drones, artificial intelligence, machine learning, virtual reality and augmented reality, and blockchain. While these positions accounted for a small percentage of total tech job postings, they indicate where organizations are headed with the technology investments.
The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of tech manufacturing (+ 18.2 percent) and packaged software (+ 15.5 percent).
