New Report Offers Details on Technology Industry in Kentucky

CompTIA Cyberstates 2017™ finds state is home to nearly 5,700 tech businesses and 50,000-plus tech professionals

Frankfort, Ky. – Technology industry employment in Kentucky recorded a modest decline in 2016, according to Cyberstates 2017™, the definitive annual analysis of the nation’s tech industry released today by CompTIA, the world’s leading technology association.

The tech industry workforce declined by an estimated 423 jobs, a drop of less than 1 percent. Kentucky is home to an estimated 50,793 tech industry workers.

Technology occupations across all other industries in Kentucky – the second component of the tech workforce – reached an estimated 64,500 in 2016.

The tech sector accounts for an estimated 3.4 percent ($6.5 billion) of the overall state economy.

The annualized average wage for a tech industry worker in Kentucky was an estimated $69,300 in 2016, 59 percent higher than the average state wage ($43,500).

Other Key Findings

  • An estimated 5,682 tech business establishments are located in Kentucky.
  • Among the leading tech occupations in the state are application software developers (6,070), computer user support specialists (5,040) and industrial engineers (4,510).
  • The strongest year-over-year job growth occurred in the categories of engineering services (+8.3 percent), computer systems design and IT services (+ 4.6 percent) and R&D and testing labs (3.8 percent).
  • Employers across the state posted an estimated 4,261 job openings for tech occupations in Q4 2016.
