Healthcare IT Makes News on Capitol Hill
In a wrap-up of news from Washington, D.C., this month, the second stage of meaningful use measures for EHRs will likely be delayed for one year, until 2014. A recent Health Affairs study reports that few small and mid-sized physician practices are fully utilizing electronic health record systems. President Obama announced new efforts to expand the Skills for America’s Future Initiative, an industry-led initiative to dramatically improve industry partnerships with community colleges to prepare 500,000 workers for new jobs. The Office of the National Coordinator called for a new initiative to spur health IT innovations through a series of prizes and challenges to improve the nation’s healthcare system.

Time to Win BIG Prizes
During Breakaway, visit booths in the Technology Vendor Fair, vote for Best of Breakaway Awards, attend educational sessions, network at meetings and donate to the Creating IT Futures Foundation to earn tag points and win great prizes. The slew of prizes that were giving away includes a trip to BBQ University at The Broadmoor for two, a World Series trip for two, a Sugar Bowl trip for two, a 42” outdoor TV, a $1,500 Nordstrom shopping spree, a Caribbean cruise for two, a Weber grill, a membership to the Rare Beer Club, and so much more. You must be present to win at 5:30 p.m. at the Technology Vendor Fair.

Community Donations Make a Difference
Our member communities chose four more IT-related charities for their philanthropic campaigns. The European IT Services & Support Community gave $5,000 to Close the Gap, an international not-for-profit organization that helps bridge the digital divide by offering used IT-equipment to schools and hospitals. The Small Business Owners Community gave its $5,000 to Techsoup, which provides non-profits and libraries with technology. The IT Security Community elected to split its $5,000 donation equally amongst Hands That Give which provides financial assistance to those affected by devastating hardships, and The Stride Center which assists individuals facing barriers to employment by providing IT training and certifications.
