Veteran Uses IT Certification to Accelerate Career
Derek LeMayDerek LeMay wanted to leverage his five years as a Marine Corps IT system administrator into a civilian career, but found that earning an associate degree at a local Florida community college wasn’t getting him where he wanted to go fast enough. So in late 2011, LeMay enrolled in New Horizons Learning Centers of Orlando’s accelerated IT certification track through CompTIA’s Troops to Tech Careers program. The training and the certifications ultimately helped LeMay land jobs with not one, but two veteran-friendly employers. Hear his story.
 
 
Small Business Tax Legislation Falls Short in Senate
The Senate failed to reach the 60 votes needed to pass S. 2237, the Small Business Jobs and Tax Relief Act.  This bill would have provided some small business tax benefits including a tax credit equal to 10 percent of the difference in the compensation paid to employees in 2012 over 2011. During floor consideration of the bill, an amendment offered by Sen. Landrieu, which included a provision to fix an anomaly in the Woman-Owned Small Business Contracting program, as well as a number of popular tax extenders, fell three votes shy of the 60 votes needed. Tying the 10-percent tax credit to an increase in employee compensation would have had a positive effect on job creation.  However, once again, the partisan nature of the Senate has prevented passage of legislation important to small tech businesses.
