CompTIA Troops to Tech Careers Program Expands Employer Registry, Launches “Veterans Inspire” Contest
More than 5,600 veterans trained and certified since program's launch
Downers Grove, Ill., July 12, 2012 – CompTIA, the non-profit association for the Information technology (IT) industry, today announced new enhancements to its Troops to Tech Careers initiative, the program that provides opportunities and resources to veterans interested in post-military careers in the IT field.
The Troops to Tech Careers corporate employment registry has been expanded to include more companies and organizations committed to prioritizing the hiring of IT certified veterans. The registry now includes 26 organizations across the country.
CompTIA has also launched a “Veterans Inspire” contest, which is open to anyone who has a story to share about an active military member or veteran. The contest will highlight the huge impact that active duty military members and veterans have on their families, friends and communities.
“Whether it’s a relative or friend, someone you’ve met in passing, a fellow military member or veteran, each story is unique,” said Todd Thibodeaux, president and chief executive officer, CompTIA. “We’ve created an outlet for people share these inspirational stories and allow others a chance to offer our veterans and active duty personnel the recognition that they’ve earned and deserve.”
To enter the contest, submit a story in 500 words or less on why you admire, appreciate or are inspired by someone for their service to our country. Submissions are being accepted now through July 23.
CompTIA will then ask people to like their favorite contest submissions between July 23 and July 27 on Facebook. Out of the top five submissions chosen by voters, three winners will be selected by CompTIA for Amazon gift card prizes: $200 for first place, $100 for second and $75 for third. Since its launch in August 2011, CompTIA’s Troops to Tech Careers initiative has positively impacted more than 5,600 veterans by providing them with training and certifications to launch careers in IT. The program’s website features two new videos profiling three veterans now working as IT professionals as a result of Troops to Tech Careers.
The program relies on a three-step process – learn, certify and work – to ease the transition from the military to civilian IT workforce.
The education and training component focuses on IT certification courses that provide veterans with necessary education and skills to be a smart, savvy IT professional in a rapidly changing growth industry. CompTIA works with local Career One Stop Centers, colleges, universities and commercial training centers nationwide to deliver these courses.
The next step focuses on certification, the key to obtaining a job in the IT industry. Earning a certification not only proves an individual has the right skills to be a successful IT professional, but it also serves as a differentiator from other candidates when applying for a job. CompTIA’s IT Certification Road Map illustrates the options for various IT career choices.

CompTIA certifications are the recognized industry standards for a broad range of technology skills, including IT fundamentals, repair and technical support, networking, security, server, storage, Linux, project management, printing and document imaging, convergence technologies, health IT, green IT, storage and cloud computing.
Many CompTIA certifications are prerequisites or electives for more advanced vendor certifications. In addition to acceptance in the private sector, the U.S. Department of Defense recognizes CompTIA certifications in its technical and management tracks for information assurance technicians and managers under DoD Directive 8570.1M. CompTIA certifications are also part of the State Department Skills Incentive Program.
