Copenhagen 22 December 2006

Copenhagen Conference
22 September

Many companies and entrepreneurs have produced remarkable results over the last decade - particularly in the fields of ICT and telecommunications. Just recently, a Danish SME was among the three 2006 1ST Grand Prize winners of the European Union. Yet it is still the case that the EU is not doing enough to ensure new success stories; R&D spending can still be increased substantially, and technological innovation must be further encouraged so to build a strong inroad into unemployment in Europe.

The Danish Government has set an ambitious goal for developing the ICT sector, which aims at putting in place improved framework conditions for the industry. This event will focus on the increasing pressure upon governments all over Europe to deliver an enabling environment with optimal conditions for high-tech innovations and, hence, increased employment in the EU.

Intellectual property right (IPR) protection and related framework conditions form an integral part of the regulatory framework for promoting innovation. During the event participants will be updated on the European Commission's July hearing on EU patent policy as well as legislative and policy developments, such as pre-competitive innovative procurement.

Interoperability, public procurement policy and open standards are key elements in the European Innovation Policy debate. The Danish Parliament has recently passed a resolution that mandates the government to assure that all future public procurement should be based on open standards. In this regard policies need to be adopted that will advance the goal of interoperability through tech-neutrality without interfering in the marketplace for technology development.

This event - organised by CompTIA in cooperation with ITB, the Danish IT Industry Association (IT Branchen) - is the 2nd annual CompTIA "Innovation Forum" meeting in Europe in 2006, following the successful meeting in Warsaw on 21 June 2006 (See for CompTIA and ITB in general: www.comptia.eu and www.ITB.dk).
