CompTIA Educational Foundation Announces November 6, Clean Out Your Tech Closet Day

Companies Can Donate Equipment to Fund IT Training for Individuals in Need

Oakbrook Terrace, Ill., October 8, 2009 - The CompTIA Educational Foundation is asking all companies to set aside time on November 6, 2009, to clean out the old inventory in their technology closets and send it to the Bids 4 Futures Auction. The used equipment sold via auction will fund information technology (IT) training and certification offered by the Foundation’s Creating Futures program for individuals in need.

“November is a perfect time to spruce up the office before the holidays arrive. While culling through their equipment, companies can donate their extra equipment to help individuals launch IT careers. We ask them to consider donating their organization’s used, end-of life, returned or excess inventory to our Bids 4 Futures Auction,” said John Venator, president and CEO of the CompTIA Educational Foundation.

The Foundation will honor those companies that donate the most equipment following the November 6 Clean Out Your Tech Closet Day.

Auction items can include:

  • Cell phones
  • PDAs
  • Desktop systems
  • Docking stations
  • Fax machines
  • Keyboards
  • Modems
  • Monitors
  • Notebooks
  • Copiers
  • Printers
  • Scanners
  • Service parts
  • Software
  • Tablet PCs
  • Video/sound cards
  • Postage machines
  • Telephones and telephone systems
  • Office furniture

Interested companies should contact the Foundation to have donated equipment shipped. The 100% tax-deductible donation then will be inventoried, marketed and sold through an online auction process. The proceeds are used to train and certify the Foundation’s Creating Futures participants.

Creating Futures provides career opportunities to groups of people historically under-represented in the IT industry, including military veterans, individuals with disabilities, minorities, women, at-risk youth and dislocated workers. Training, mentoring, courseware, practice exams, and certification vouchers are provided at no cost to these individuals. Creating Futures participants train toward CompTIA certifications — which are known throughout the IT industry as reliable predictors of employee success and are therefore some of the best ways to break into the IT field.

Donations to the Bids 4 Futures Auction provide an easy, safe and economical way to dispose of unwanted equipment, help organizations meet their philanthropic goals while gaining tax benefits, and allow IT service providers to suggest to their clients to let them clean out their excess inventory.

Individuals and companies can make a donation and prospective participants can apply for training by visiting the CompTIA Educational Foundation Web site, http://www.CompTIA-EF.org.
